Ozone Depletion
(Ozone Depletion)
(Introduction)
(What is Ozone Layer)
(Causes of Ozone Depletion)
(Ozone Hole)
(Effects of Ozone Depletion)
(Climate Change)
(Measures for Protection of Ozone Layer)
(Montreal Protocol – 1987)
(Public Awareness)
(Afforestation)
(International Ozone Day)
(Conclusion)
Environmental Hazards: Ozone Layer Depletion
(Ozone Depletion)
1. Introduction
The ozone layer is located in the stratosphere of Earth's atmosphere, at an altitude of approximately 10 to 50 kilometers.
This layer prevents harmful ultraviolet rays (UV rays) from the sun from reaching the Earth's surface.
When this layer gradually depletes or thins, the process is called ozone depletion.
2. What is the ozone layer?
Ozone (O₃) is a gas composed of three oxygen molecules.
It is formed and destroyed by the sun's ultraviolet rays.
This layer acts as a "protective shield" for the Earth.
3. Causes of Ozone Depletion
Ozone layer depletion is primarily caused by man-made chemicals. The main ones are:
1. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)
These substances are used in refrigerators, air conditioners, aerosol sprays, foam-forming agents, etc.
When CFCs rise into the atmosphere, the sun's ultraviolet rays break them down, releasing chlorine (Cl).
One chlorine atom can destroy approximately 100,000 ozone molecules.
2. Halons – used in fire extinguishers.
3. Carbon tetrachloride (CCl₄) – used as an industrial solvent.
4. Nitrous oxide (N₂O) – released from fertilizers used in agriculture.
5. Other chemical pollutants – jet fuel, rockets, and industrial gases.
4. Ozone Hole
In the 1980s, scientists discovered a large hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica.
This is called the "Ozone Hole," which is most extensive between September and November.
Polar stratospheric clouds that form during cold weather activate chlorine and bromine, leading to rapid ozone depletion.
5. Effects of Ozone Depletion
(1) Effects on Human Health
Increases the risk of skin cancer.
Eye diseases such as cataracts.
Weakens the immune system.
(2) Effects on Plants and Crops
Ultraviolet rays affect the photosynthesis process of plants.
Agricultural production may decline.
(3) Impact on Marine Life
Negative impact on phytoplankton, which affects the food chain.
(4) Climate Change
The depletion of the ozone layer disrupts the heat balance in the atmosphere, leading to an increase in global temperatures.
6. Measures for Protection of the Ozone Layer
(1) Stopping the use of CFCs
CFCs should be replaced with environmentally friendly gases (Hydrofluorocarbons – HFCs) in refrigerators, air conditioners, and sprays.
(2) Montreal Protocol (1987)
This is an international agreement that limits the production and use of ozone-depleting substances.
It was implemented under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
(3) Adopting alternative technologies
Using "CFC-free" appliances and eco-friendly products.
(4) Public Awareness
Education and campaigning about the importance of the ozone layer and its protection.
(5) Afforestation
Planting more trees maintains atmospheric balance.
🔷 7. International Ozone Day
International Ozone Day is celebrated every year on September 16th.
This day commemorates the Montreal Protocol.
🔷 8. Conclusion
The ozone layer is a protective shield for life on Earth.
If its depletion continues, it will have serious adverse effects on humans, animals, plants, and the entire ecosystem.
Therefore, it is our collective responsibility to protect the ozone layer.
