II HG 1 Schools of Human Geography
(Schools of Human Geography)
(Environmental Determinism)
(Friedrich Ratzel)
(E. C. Semple)
(Huntington)
(Possibilism)
(Vidal de la Blache)
(Neo-Determinism / Stop and Go Determinism)
(Griffith Taylor)
(Regional / Cultural Approach)
(Carl Sauer)
(Behavioural Approach)
(Quantitative School)
(Modern Approaches)
(Humanistic Geography)
(Radical Geography)
(Feminist Geography)
Major Schools of Thought in Human Geography
Human geography studies the reciprocal relationship between humans and the environment. To explain this relationship, various schools of thought have developed over time, which are known as the schools of human geography.
1. Environmental Determinism
Meaning
According to this school of thought, the natural environment completely controls human life, culture, and activities.
Core Idea
“Man is a product of nature.”
Key Scholars
Friedrich Ratzel
Ellen Churchill Semple
Ellsworth Huntington
Main Characteristics
Nature is all-powerful
Humans are passive
Climate, topography, and soil determine human life
Examples
People in cold regions are hardworking
People in hot regions are lazy (now considered unacceptable)
Criticism
Neglects human intelligence and technology
Exaggerated and one-sided perspective
2. Possibilism
Meaning
Nature provides possibilities, but humans select and utilize them with their intelligence and technology.
Core Idea
“Nature sets the limits, man acts.”
Proponent
Vidal de la Blache
Main Characteristics
Humans play an active role
Culture, technology, and economic factors are important
The environment influences, but does not control
Examples
Agriculture through irrigation in deserts
Different cultures in similar climates
Significance
Balanced and scientific approach
Foundation of modern geography
3. Neo-Determinism (Stop and Go Determinism)
Meaning
This presents a middle ground between determinism and possibilism.
Core Idea
“Humans can utilize nature, but within its limits.” Proponent
Griffith Taylor
Main Characteristics
Nature acts as a 'guide'
Humans are not completely independent
Emphasis on balanced development
Examples
Excessive deforestation → Environmental crisis
Uncontrolled industrialization → Pollution
4. Regional or Cultural Approach
Meaning
Understanding human-environment relationships based on the cultural characteristics of a specific region.
Key Scholar
Carl Sauer
Characteristics
Study of cultural landscapes
Nature transformed by humans
5. Behavioral Approach
Meaning
Study of human decisions, behavior, and mental processes.
Characteristics
Emphasis on human decision-making processes
Useful in urban and economic geography
6. Quantitative School
Meaning
Mathematical, statistical, and model-based studies in human geography.
Characteristics
Scientific and objective
Use of computers and GIS
7. Modern Approaches
Humanistic Geography
Radical Geography
Feminist Geography
Conclusion
The ideologies of human geography have evolved over time. Today, neo-determinism and possibilism are considered the most practical and balanced approaches.
