Carbon Cycle

(Photosynthesis)

(Respiration)

(Decomposition)

Explaining the Carbon Cycle

The carbon cycle is the natural biogeochemical process by which the element carbon continuously circulates between the atmosphere, biosphere, lithosphere, and hydrosphere. It is essential for the existence of life on Earth.

1. Carbon in the Atmosphere

Carbon in the atmosphere is primarily found in the form of carbon dioxide (CO₂) gas. It reaches the atmosphere through respiration, volcanic eruptions, and the combustion of fossil fuels.

2. Photosynthesis

Green plants use sunlight to extract atmospheric CO₂ and produce food (glucose).

This process is called photosynthesis.

Carbon is stored in the plant's body.

3. Transmission through the Food Chain

When herbivores eat plants and carnivores eat herbivores, carbon is transferred from one organism to another. This is how carbon flows through the food chain.

 4. Respiration

All organisms (plants and animals) release CO₂ back into the atmosphere during respiration.

Thus, carbon is returned to the atmosphere.

5. Decomposition

Dead plants and organisms are decomposed by microorganisms (bacteria, fungi).

In this process, carbon is released into the atmosphere or soil in the form of CO₂ or methane (CH₄).

6. Fossil Fuels and Combustion

Dead organisms buried for millions of years turn into coal, petroleum, and natural gas.

When humans burn them, large amounts of CO₂ are released into the atmosphere.

7. The Role of the Oceans

Oceans absorb CO₂.

Marine organisms (such as shellfish and corals) store carbon in the form of calcium carbonate, which can later form rocks.

 Importance of the Carbon Cycle

Regulates Earth's temperature.

Maintains energy flow in the biosphere.

Helps maintain climate balance.

Necessary for plant growth.

Human Impact

Industrialization and deforestation are increasing CO₂ levels, leading to problems like global warming and climate change.
