II HG II Geographic Environment and Man
(Geographic Environment and Man)”
(A) स्थलमंडल (Lithosphere)
(Hydrosphere)
(Atmosphere)
(Biosphere)
(A) पर्यावरणीय नियतिवाद (Environmental Determinism)
(Ratzel)
(Possibilism)
(Neo-Determinism)
(Sustainable Development)
“Geographic Environment and Man”
1. Meaning of Geographic Environment
Geographic environment refers to the natural surroundings in which human life develops. It includes all the natural elements of the Earth that influence human life, activities, and culture.
Definition
“Geographic environment comprises all the natural conditions under which human life operates.”
2. Components of the Geographic Environment
(A) Lithosphere
Mountains, plateaus, plains, valleys
Influences agriculture, mining, transportation, and settlement
(B) Hydrosphere
Oceans, rivers, lakes, groundwater
Basis for irrigation, drinking water, industry, and fisheries
(C) Atmosphere
Temperature, rainfall, wind, humidity
Influences agricultural cycles, human health, and housing styles
(D) Biosphere
Vegetation, animals, humans
Connected to the food chain and ecological balance
3. Relationship between Man and the Geographic Environment
The relationship between man and the environment is reciprocal. The environment affects humans.
Humans also change the environment.
4. Major Ideologies of Human-Environment Relationship
(A) Environmental Determinism
Main Idea:
Human development is entirely dependent on the environment.
Humans are "slaves" of the environment.
Proponents:
Ratzel
Ellsworth Huntington
Examples:
Lazy lifestyle in tropical regions
Hardworking societies in cold regions
Criticism:
Neglects human intelligence and technology
(B) Possibilism
Main Idea:
The environment only offers possibilities.
Humans utilize them with their intelligence.
Proponent:
Vidal de la Blache
Examples:
Agriculture through irrigation in deserts
Terrace farming in mountainous regions
(C) Neo-Determinism / Probabilistic Determinism
Main Idea:
The environment is a "guide."
Humans are free within the limits of the environment.
Proponent:
Griffith Taylor
Example:
Industrial development within the limits of water resources
5. Impact of the Geographical Environment on Human Life
(A) Impact on Economic Activities
Type of agriculture
Location of industries
Transportation routes
(B) Impact on Social and Cultural Life
Food
Clothing
Housing style
Customs and traditions
(C) Impact on Population Distribution
Dense population in flat and fertile areas
Sparse population in deserts and polar regions
6. Impact of Humans on the Environment
Deforestation
Pollution
Climate change
Loss of biodiversity
➡️ This has increased the need for environmental protection.
7. Sustainable Development
Development that:
Meets present needs
Does not compromise the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
8. Conclusion
The relationship between humans and the geographical environment is dynamic, interdependent, and ever-changing. Modern humans are no longer merely dependent on the environment, but also responsible stewards of it.
