(Hematite)
(Magnetite)
(Limonite)
(Siderite)
Mineral: Iron Ore
1. Introduction
Iron ore is a vitally important mineral from which iron is extracted. Iron is considered the backbone of modern industrial development. Without it, the manufacture of machines, tools, railways, buildings, vehicles, etc. is impossible.
2. The Importance of Iron Ore
The Basis of Industrialization
The main raw material for steel production
Used in transportation (railways, ships, vehicles)
Construction work (bridges, buildings, machinery)
Used in defense equipment
👉 That is why it is said – “Industrial development is impossible without iron.”
3. Types of Iron Ore
Iron ore is divided into four main types:
(1) Hematite
Chemical formula: Fe₂O₃
Iron content: 60–70%
Color: Red
This is the best and most useful ore.
(2) Magnetite
Formula: Fe₃O₄
Iron content: 70–75% (highest)
Has magnetic properties
High-quality ore
(3) Limonite
Iron content: 40–60%
Color: Yellow-brown
Has high moisture content
(4) Siderite
Formula: FeCO₃
Iron content: 30–40%
Has low quality
4. Geographical distribution of iron ore
(A) Distribution in the world
China – Largest producer
Australia – Major exporter
Brazil – High-quality ore
India – Fourth place
Russia, Ukraine, USA, South Africa
(B) Distribution in India
Major iron ore production regions in India:
1. Odisha-Jharkhand belt
Largest producing region
Major mines: Singhbhum, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj
2. Durg-Bastar-Chandrapur belt (Chhattisgarh-Maharashtra)
Major mine: Bailadila
High-quality ore
3. Karnataka belt
Major areas: Bellary, Chitradurga
4. Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh
